Low-paid Australian workers in retail, fast food, hospitality, pharmacy and restaurant could be up to $370 worse off this Easter, due to Scott Morrison’s penalty rate cuts.
In Maranoa alone, up to 9,800 workers could be affected by penalty rate cuts. Many of these workers will be giving up time with family to work this Easter weekend.
This blow to pay packets in the 10-day period from Good Friday will see cuts by up to the following amounts:
- Fast Food – $218.22
- Hospitality – $281.78
- Retail – $276.55
- Pharmacy – $369.41
- Restaurant – $225.40
Even bigger cuts to Sunday penalty rates will occur this July, and the July after that, unless a Labor Government is elected.
At a time when everything is going up except wages, the Liberal and National parties are so out of touch that they support cuts to penalty rates.
Scott Morrison and every member of the Liberal and National parties, including David Littleproud, voted eight times to cut workers’ take-home pay.
Local Labor candidate, Linda Little, said the problem under the Liberal and National parties is that everything in Australia is going up except your wages.
“It says everything you need to know about the Liberals and Nationals that they’re cutting workers’ wages but giving millionaires at the top end of town an $11,000 a year tax cut.”
“Many local workers have no choice but to go to work over this long weekend in order to put food on the table and pay the bills. They deserve their penalty rates.”
Linda Little said that David Littleproud needs to explain why they supported cuts to workers’ wages.
If elected, in the first 100 days, Labor will legislate to reverse the cuts to penalty rates, restoring fair pay. We will change the laws to make sure they can’t be cut for anyone again.
Australians deserve a pay rise – and they aren’t getting one under Scott Morrison and the Liberal and National parties.
This election is a choice between Labor’s plan to restore penalty rates, or bigger tax loopholes for the top end of town under the Liberals and Nationals.
After six years of Liberal and National cuts and chaos, our united Labor team is ready to deliver a fair go for all Australians.
